Best 5 Home Video Products - By John P. Falcone – CNET – 2/26/09

Except for a smaller hard drive and more-generic cosmetics, the TiVo HD delivers, essentially, the same feature set as the earlier Series3 model, but for a much more reasonable $300. In addition to TiVo's best-in-class interface, you'll also get a panoply of Internet and network-friendly features: Multi-Room Viewing; TiVoToGo; downloadable videos from TiVoCast and Amazon's Unbox; Internet radio; Rhapsody; podcasts; streaming of music and photos from a networked PC; and online scheduling control. In other words, the TiVo HD is a full-service network media device that runs circles around those & quot;free" DVRs from your cable company. Have satellite instead? DirecTV subscribers should opt for the HR20, while Dish Network subscribers should go for the excellent ViP722.  Read More

The 100 Best Products of 2008 – By Mark Sullivan – PC World – 5/27/08

After a good deal of--ahem--lively discussion, the editors at PC World have completed this year's list of the 100 best technology products available today. How did we do it? After nominating hundreds of devices, apps, sites, and services we knew to be good, we rated each one on its design, functionality, performance, and impact; the ones garnering the highest total scores made our list. Note that we chose not to rate products specifically on their price or value, focusing instead on their overall quality. After the scoring was over and the dust had cleared, we had a list that served, among other things, to remind us of what an exciting time in tech this truly is, with game-changing product development happening on many fronts. 39. TiVo HD (digital video recorder, $300; service, $13/month) With its excellent user interface and its ability to record high-def programs, the TiVo HD box might be all the DVR you need.  Read More

The Top 10 Gadgets of 2007 - By Ben Patterson - The Gadget Hound - 12/17/2007

TiVo HD: The best of the set-top DVRs made the leap to HD in late 2006, but the $800 price tag for the new Series3 box was a bitter pill. Luckily, the $300 TiVo HD arrived in August. In the meantime, TiVo's been busy adding support for Amazon Unbox video downloads, the Rhapsody music service, and Picasa photo libraries.  Read More

Best Home Video Gear of 2007 - By John P. Falcone - cnet.com - 12/14/2007

Best HD DVR for cable -- TiVo HD

Except for a smaller hard drive and more-generic cosmetics, the TiVo HD delivers, essentially, the same feature set as the Series3 model for a much more reasonable $300. Even better, a recent software upgrade has finally added the Multi-Room Viewing and TiVoToGo features that have been long available on non-HD models. Add those to a cavalcade of online features--access to downloadable videos from TiVoCast and Amazon's Unbox; Internet radio; Rhapsody; podcasts; streaming of music and photos from a networked PC; and online scheduling control--and you've got a full-service network media device that runs circles around those "free" DVRs from your cable company.  Read More

The Best Tech in 2007: Home Theater - computershopper.com - 11/7/2007

Best digital video recorder - TiVo HD

TiVo's first stab at a high-definition digital video recorder (DVR), the Series3, was so expensive ($799) that it was no competition for cable and satellite companies' own high-def DVRs leased to customers for small monthly fees. TiVo responded with the HD, which has less hard drive space than the Series 3 but retains most of its functionality at a far lower price. It should keep TiVo fans from switching to generic cable and satellite HD DVRs anytime soon.  Read More

Best in Test - By Rick Broida - WIRED Magazine - 10/23/2007

Top pick of any video gear - TiVo HD

A year ago, we gave the $800 TiVo Series3 our Best of Test award. Now, you can get most of its top-of-the-line features for $500 less. The hard drive is a little bit smaller — just 180 hours of standard-def recording or 20 hours of HD — but you get the same sweet TiVo hallmarks, like Season Pass and the technophobe-friendly user interface. Hooray for progress!  Read More

100 Best Products of the Year - By Eric Dahl - PC World - 5/21/2007

TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder

The TiVo Series3 does an excellent job of recording HD and SD programming. I connected the device to a 50-inch Samsung plasma display via HDMI, which is a new port for TiVo (it also has component outputs). I set it to record two programs simultaneously, nonstop, over a couple days, and the device performed like a champ. TiVo says the unit will record up to 52 hours at its best-quality setting (thanks to the 250GB hard drive)  Read More

TiVo HDR110 (1999)

It's hard to believe but it's true. TiVo has been around for almost a decade, making it nearly geriatric in the world of tech. The premise is simple: TiVo (and its competitor ReplayTV) replaced the VHS tape with a monster hard drive, recording shows to disk instead of analog media. That meant you could pause and resume live TV, skip through commercials in an instant, and record an entire season of shows with just a few clicks of the remote control.  Read More
